The Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) is the new web based system for authorisation of entry into the United States that came into effect for all people travelling on or after 12th January 2009. This system will prompt you to answer basic biographical and eligibilty questions that had previously been asked on the paper I-94W form.
Applications may be submitted any time prior to travel, but must be at least 72 hours prior to travel. In most cases you will receive a response within seconds.
As of 8th September 2010 a fee of $14 will apply to all applications. Applications for ESTA prior to this date should not incur a charge.

Under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, passport holders from 27 countries, including Ireland and the UK, may enter the U.S. without a visa for travel or business purposes for a maximum period of 90 days.
All EU passport holders visiting the United States require an individual machine readable passport and a return onward ticket to avail of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. Otherwise an advance visa is required from a U.S. Diplomatic or Consular Mission.
Children, including infants, who are endorsed on a parent's passport must have an individual machine readable passport or else obtain a visa in the parent's passport.
